This weekend, Jambes à point comptés, a branch of the non-profit organization “Société Royale Les Jambiens,” organized its second edition of “Fil en Folie.” Soon it became clear that embroidery and texture on textiles can convey passion and simple or spectacular messages.

For Pascale Dussart it was a gift in embroidery that sparked her interest. Self-study and participation in the courses and workshops of the Jambes à point comptés club did the rest. After 35 years, she is still passionate about making embroidered works. In the autumn and winter period she prefers to embroider on a white fabric. In the summer, when there is plenty of light, she embroiders mainly on colorful textile backgrounds.
Catherine Prioult first embroiders patterns based on designs such as those by Beatrix Potter, objects and scenes of daily life or that reflect the charm of the past. She then combines her embroidery with textiles that match the colors or themes, resulting in bags in different sizes and for different purposes. The textiles or buttons she uses are usually recycled materials. For this she works together with a tapestry decorator.
After studying textile art, Mélanie Piron travelled to Japan for three months to discover craft techniques. “As every region has its traditions, which you can find in all kinds of articles,” she explains. After a second trip to this land of the rising sun, she realized that Belgium also has traditions that bring people together. Her brand Kanojo design “she” in Japanese, became a reality. Her textile subjects that she creates focus mainly on Belgian folklore. Although during Fil en Folie she also showed textiles with floral motifs that are typical for certain regions in French-speaking Belgium and with her personal view she brings an ode to women.

In addition to the French artist Alain Séchas, BPS22 in Charleroi is showing the exhibition Tout Cramer-Burn it all down by Juliette Vanwaterloo until 5 January 2025. This graduate of the École Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Angers (France) with a master in Tapestry and Textile Arts from the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (Belgium), works with hand embroidery, bobbin lace, tufting, and other textile techniques, which she combines with an installation-based practice. In 2023, she won the Prix Médiatine, the Prix artistique of the City of Tournai, and the first prize at Art Contest.

All excellent artisan, traditional talents, skills should be preserved and carried forward with care. We have to support the artists with resources, buying their creations will help them definitely. Such skills should never become a tale from the past. Kudos to the artists and also the writer who’s highlighted the art! Let’s collectively make an effort and contribute to preserve ART.
