“Luz”, the search of Light

Until the end of 2025, Bénédicte de Meeûs’ plexiglass artworks can be seen at the Nassau 42 Fine Arts gallery in Antwerp. As a child she loved drawing and crafting with small objects. She grew up in the 60s and 70s. Her father was a great lover of the design of that time and of modern architecture. After experimenting with sculpting in clay and paper in all its transparency, but vulnerable in 3D, her introduction to the work of James Turell encouraged her to follow her own quest for light.

During my meeting with the artist in Namur, where she lives and works, she said:

“Events in my life inspire me now and intuitively prompt me to refine my search for light in form, matter and colors. Only with the transparency of the plexiglass, without using electricity, do I try to bring out the light through the colors I choose spontaneously. With this material I can express my way of simplifying and minimizing shapes. With the square shape, as a symbol of stability and with the circular shape as the symbol of infinity and harmony.”

Silence follows and then:

“It is as if I am drawing a parallel with the small light that each of us carries within. I call my works ‘Luz’, Spanish for light. The search for this inner light keeps me on the path of further research.”

  1. For me, this makes a visit to Antwerp and Namur more than worth it. Although, it’s still a puzzle in my agenda to set aside a few days beforehand. I still regret that it didn’t work out earlier.

  2. A beautiful article with a creative idea. Thank you Maria.
You made us discover something beautiful and special.

  3. Prachtig in kleur en transparantie als een doorzicht of doorkijken naar de wereld, Rustig in vorm, eerder als stilte. Een mooi vergelijk Maria naar het licht in ons: kleurrijk, transparant, gevoelig, rustig maar sterk.
    ❤️
